75.8% of Indians Now Active Dairy Consumers, Says Godrej Jersey Study

India’s dairy consumption is evolving beyond the traditional glass of milk, with 75.8% of Indians now classified as “active dairy consumers”, according to the FY25-26 Lactograph Report by Godrej Jersey. The study shows that households across the country regularly consume milk alongside multiple dairy products such as curd, paneer, ghee, butter, lassi, yogurt and cheese, highlighting dairy’s growing role as a daily nutrition system embedded in Indian food culture.

Commenting on the findings, Shantanu Raj, Head of Marketing at Godrej Jersey, said India has moved decisively beyond the idea of “just a glass of milk,” with dairy evolving into a dynamic value-added category spanning everyday essentials and high-protein beverages. He noted that the company is focusing on expanding formats that combine nutrition, convenience and versatility for modern consumers.

Similar trends are visible in Guwahati, where demand for paneer, curd, flavored milk and yogurt has seen steady growth in modern retail outlets and neighbourhood stores. The city’s expanding urban consumer base, rising health awareness and growing café culture have increased the popularity of dairy-based beverages, smoothies and protein drinks. Retailers in Guwahati also report strong sales of traditional dairy products such as ghee and paneer during festive seasons, reflecting a blend of traditional consumption and emerging lifestyle-driven demand.
