Culprit behind Kokrajhar rail explosion identified, likely to be held soon

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters on Thursday, October 23, that the individual responsible for the railway track explosion in Kokrajhar has been identified. The chief minister shared a video of the same on his ‘X’ handle, assuring that Assam Police will soon apprehend the person involved in the incident. A major accident was averted in Kokrajhar last night,” his post stated. “We have identified the culprit and will soon apprehend him.” “While I do not wish to discuss further details, the person identified has multiple cases registered against him both in Assam and Jharkhand, Sarma further revealed to the media.

“It is highly likely Assam Police will soon apprehend him. Whether any organisation is linked to the individual will be found out at a later stage.” The explosion took place on the same day, damaging a section of the railway track near Kokrajhar station. The affected area was situated about five kilometres east of the station, between the towns of Kokrajhar and Salakati. Railway officials quickly moved to investigate the scene, with initial findings suggesting an improvised explosive device (IED) was the cause of the damage.

A train had fortunately already passed the section when the loco driver spotted the explosion site, preventing a catastrophic derailment. The loco driver immediately informed the relevant authorities, including the railways and the railway police, prompting a rapid response. Engineers were immediately tasked with inspecting the damaged track, while explosives experts carried out initial examinations to determine the precise nature of the explosive. The temporary suspension of services had caused panic among passengers awaiting delayed trains, though train operations were later allowed to resume.
