The Sribhumi District Congress on Friday, December 26 organized a candlelight march to protest the brutal killing of one Bengali youth in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district during the ongoing protest over land dispute. The peaceful procession began from the Sribhumi District Congress office and passed through the main thoroughfares of the town before culminating at AOC Point. Party workers and supporters carried candles and raised slogans, demanding justice for the victim and strict action against those responsible for the crime.
Addressing the gathering, Sribhumi District Congress president Tapas Purkayastha expressed deep anguish over the incident. He said that only days after protests were held against the killing of Dipu Das in Bangladesh, a similarly horrific incident had taken place in Karbi Anglong, where one specially abled man was allegedly burnt alive by protesters. Purkayastha questioned the silence surrounding the Karbi Anglong incident and asked why there had been no widespread protest or strong response against such a grave crime.
He stressed that selective outrage undermines the pursuit of justice and erodes public confidence in the system. Warning of intensified political action, the District Congress president stated that if the accused are not awarded strict punishment at the earliest, the Congress would be compelled to launch a massive agitation in protest. The party reiterated its demand for swift and impartial investigation and urged the authorities to ensure justice for the victim without delay.
