Sushmita Dev has written to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Cachar district, urging immediate and stringent action in connection with a recent alleged gang rape reported from Silchar.
In a letter addressed to Cachar SSP Partha Pratim Das, the MP expressed grave concern over reports that the incident occurred on the Silchar Bye-pass Road on the night of February 19. She said the case has once again raised serious questions about the safety and security of residents in Silchar town.
Referring to media reports, Dev pointed out that the alleged crime took place at a time when the police administration was reportedly engaged in preparations for the visit of the Union Home Minister and the Chief Minister of Assam to the Barak Valley region. She sought details of the steps taken so far in the investigation, describing the matter as highly sensitive and requiring urgent attention.
The MP also highlighted what she termed as recurring incidents along the Silchar Bye-pass and adjoining areas, alleging that the stretch has increasingly become unsafe for public movement, especially during night hours.
In her letter, Dev urged the SSP to personally intervene in the case, ensure the swift identification and arrest of the accused, and initiate stringent legal proceedings in accordance with the law. She further called for enhanced night patrolling along the Silchar Bye-pass and nearby localities.
Additionally, she recommended the installation of adequate street lighting and CCTV cameras to improve surveillance and deter criminal activities. Noting that the area now falls under the jurisdiction of the Silchar Municipal Corporation, she suggested that municipal funds be utilised to strengthen infrastructure related to public safety.
Police officials have not yet issued a detailed statement regarding the progress of the investigation.
