RGU Athletes Shine with Gold and Silver at All India and North East Zone Karate Championships

Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) on Friday organized a high-profile felicitation ceremony to honor its medal-winning karate players following their remarkable performance at both the North East Zone and All India Inter-University Karate Championships for the 2025-26 session. The prestigious competitions were held at Dibrugarh University, Assam, from April 1 to April 9, under the aegis of the Association of Indian Universities.

The RGU team demonstrated exceptional prowess at the North East Zone Inter-University Karate Championship, securing the second runner-up position in a competitive field of 76 participating universities. Individual brilliance was on full display as Sonam Porang from Dera Natung Government College (DNGC) clinched the gold medal in the men’s -55 kg Kumite category. Similarly, Gomi Dulom of Donyi Polo B.Ed. College dominated the women’s -68 kg kumite category to secure a second gold for the university.

The university’s success extended to the national stage at the All India Inter-University Karate Championship, where the athletes secured one silver and two bronze medals. Lokam Nime of DNGC fought her way to a silver medal in the women’s -55 kg kumite category. Adding to the tally, Sonam Porang and Gomi Dulom continued their winning streaks by securing bronze medals in the men’s -55 kg and women’s +68 kg Kumite categories, respectively.

During the ceremony, RGU Vice-Chancellor In-Charge, Professor S.K. Nayak, congratulated the students and praised their discipline and unwavering hard work. He remarked that such significant sporting achievements reflect the university’s core commitment to promoting holistic development and excellence beyond the classroom. Special recognition was also given to the team’s coach, Raja Yangfo, whose strategic guidance and leadership were instrumental in the team’s success.

The event saw the attendance of several high-ranking university officials, including Registrar Dr. N.T. Rikam, Finance Officer Professor Otem Padung, and Controller of Examinations Dr. Bijay Raji. The dignitaries interacted directly with the athletes, urging the broader student body to draw inspiration from these champions and strive for excellence in the field of sports. This celebration underscores RGU’s growing reputation as a powerhouse for athletic talent in the Northeast.
