IMD Alert: Extremely Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms Likely in 8 Assam Districts in 3 Days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the likelihood of thunderstorm and lightning with very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the coming two to three days at isolated places in several districts of Assam.
The districts likely to be affcetd by heavy rainfall and inclement weather include Chirang, Kokrajhar, Baksa, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur Barpeta, Bongaigaon, and Dhubri.
“The weather pattern suggests that thunderstorm and lightning with heavy spells of rain is very likely to occur in the districts, especially in the western part of the state in the coming 2-3two to three days which may aggravate water logging, slow vehicular movement, and increase the risk of localised landslides in vulnerable pockets,” an official statement issued on Saturday evening said.
The district authorities and Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) are closely monitoring the situation and emergency response systems are being kept on alert.
In view of the situation, ASDMA has requested people of the state to take all necessary precautions and remain vigilant.
“Daily commuters and long-distance travellers are requested to plan their routines accordingly, avoiding unnecessary movement during periods of intense rainfall. Residents in low-lying and hillside areas should stay alert for any signs of flooding or landslides,” the advisory read.
The status of the situation will be updated by ASDMA on its official website, https://asdma.assam.gov.in/resource/assam-weather-forecast, and on all its social media handles from time to time for general awareness.
“Hence, people are urged to stay tuned to official weather updates and follow advisories issued by local authorities to ensure safety during this prolonged spell of rain,” it advised.
