Renault India has entered into a strategic partnership with [Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur to strengthen its vehicle research and development capabilities in the country by leveraging the institute’s advanced National Wind Tunnel Facility (NWTF).Under the collaboration, Renault India will use the state-of-the-art facility to carry out aerodynamic and wind-noise testing for its passenger vehicles, supporting the development of next-generation models with improved efficiency, safety and performance. The company said the initiative combines Renault’s global engineering expertise with IIT Kanpur’s advanced research infrastructure to enable more precise vehicle validation and product optimization.
Dr. Vikraman V, Chief of Engineering, Renault Group India, said the partnership reflects India’s growing role in Renault’s global innovation and engineering ecosystem while helping develop future-ready vehicles. Prof. Dr. Alakesh Chandra Mandal, Coordinator of the National Wind Tunnel Facility at IIT Kanpur, said the collaboration expands the facility’s application beyond aerospace research and strengthens automotive innovation in India. The National Wind Tunnel Facility is India’s first advanced facility of its kind, featuring a continuous closed-jet test section capable of evaluating vehicle aerodynamics at speeds between 80 kmph and 280 kmph. The facility is also being upgraded to support testing at speeds exceeding 400 kmph.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlines a framework covering commercial engagement, intellectual property management and confidentiality to facilitate long-term collaboration between the two organisations. In Guwahati, the partnership is expected to benefit consumers in the Northeast over time by supporting the development of vehicles with improved fuel efficiency, lower cabin noise and enhanced driving performance. As Renault continues to expand its engineering capabilities in India, dealerships and customers in Guwahati could eventually gain access to technologically advanced models better suited to diverse road and climatic conditions.
