Cotton University teams lead Northeast in NISM-SEBI financial literacy quiz

Cotton University emerged as a strong performer at the North-Eastern Regional Round of the National Financial Literacy Quiz (NFLQ) 2026, organised by the National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) in collaboration with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) at Cotton University, Guwahati, on September 12 and 13.

The fifth regional round brought together undergraduate and postgraduate students from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura, with questions covering financial markets, investment principles, investor protection, regulations, financial products and responsible financial practices. More than four lakh students participated in the college and online qualifying rounds across India.

In the UG category, Cotton University’s Department of Arts team of Aniruddha Rudra and Mohixit Goswami won Rs 40,000, followed by Tripura University at Rs 30,000 and Jorhat Engineering College at Rs 20,000. In the PG category, Cotton University’s Anwesha Bujarbaruah and Anurag Sarma secured Rs 40,000, while Girijananda Chowdhury University and Tezpur University won Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively.

In Guwahati, the initiative comes as financial market participation and investor awareness gain importance in Assam, particularly among younger and digitally connected investors. Greater understanding of market mechanisms, investor rights and risk can support more informed participation in the region’s evolving financial ecosystem.

Twelve UG and 12 PG institutions from the Northeast qualified for the national rounds. The top-performing teams will compete at the NISM Campus, Patalganga, Maharashtra, in November. NISM Director Sashi Krishnan said financial education must go beyond basic concepts to include caution, risk awareness and informed decision-making, while SEBI officials emphasised the importance of informed investors for a resilient securities market.
