Harmeet Singh appointed DGP of Assam

The Assam government has appointed Harmeet Singh, a 1992-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam. The appointment, announced via a notification issued by the state’s Home and Political Department on Monday, May 19, follows the promotion of Singh to the Apex Scale in Level 17 of the Pay Matrix, effective from the day he assumed full charge.

Prior to Singh’s appointment as DGP, he had been serving as the acting DGP since January 27, after former DGP GP Singh was posted as Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). In addition to overseeing the state police force, Singh currently holds several other key roles as well, including Director General of Civil Defence, Commandant General of Home Guards, and Director of Fire & Emergency Services.

An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, and Punjab University, Chandigarh, Singh holds both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in History. Over the course of his career, he has specialised in areas such as counter-terrorism, radicalisation prevention, cyber security, child protection, and emergency response. Singh has also received multiple national honours in recognition of his service, including the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and the Police Medal for Gallantry.
