In accordance with the National Policy for Rare Diseases (NPRD), 2021, the Government of India has made Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, a Center of Excellence (CoE) for Rare Diseases. In a formal statement released on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (Rare Disease Cell) approved AMCH’s inclusion as one of the top government tertiary institutions with resources for rare disease diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.
With this, AMCH is now one of only 15 such centers of excellence nationwide and the first medical institution in Assam and the Northeast to obtain this esteemed honor. The memorandum states that AMCH’s duties and operations under this designation will be conducted in compliance with the NPRD, 2021 rules as well as any instructions that the Ministry may release from time to time. Patients from Assam and throughout the Northeastern region stand to gain from this accreditation, which is anticipated to increase access to specialist healthcare services and medical research in the area of uncommon and complicated diseases.
