A major bridge in Dimapur is damaged by a landslide, forcing road closures and traffic detours

Heavy rains triggered a major landslide in Nagaland’s Dimapur district on Sunday, severely damaging parts of a vital bridge along National Highway 29 and forcing the suspension of traffic between Dimapur and New Chumoukedima. The disruption has led to widespread inconvenience for commuters, commercial transporters, and local businesses that rely heavily on the route.

According to Nagaland Police, the damaged stretch falls between the Chathe Bridge and New Chumoukedima Bridge, one of the most crucial links connecting the two urban centers. Authorities moved quickly to close the road for safety reasons and announced traffic diversions through alternative routes.

To maintain connectivity, police issued detailed guidelines for both light and heavy vehicles. Light motor vehicles (LMVs) are now permitted to travel through the Pimla–Chumoukedima–Jharanpani–Medziphema route, but only between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm daily. For those seeking more flexibility, an additional LMV route through Niuland–Ghotovi–Zhadima has been opened throughout the restricted period.

Movement of heavy motor vehicles (HMVs) carrying essential goods has been restricted to specific time slots to ease congestion and ensure safety. Vehicles travelling from Pimla–Mhantsi–Medziphema can operate from 6:00 pm to 12:00 midnight, while those from Medziphema–Jharanpani–Mhantsi–Pimla are allowed between 12:00 midnight and 6:00 am.

Officials stressed that the time-bound restrictions are crucial to maintaining the flow of essential supplies, including food, fuel, and medical goods, while repairs continue on the damaged highway.
