Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to visit Guwahati on August 29, where he will combine government programmes with a major political show of strength. His visit is being viewed as the formal launch of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) campaign for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. According to BJP general secretary Pallab Lochan Das, Shah’s day-long schedule includes the inauguration of the newly built Raj Bhavan and the launch of the year-long birth centenary celebrations of Golap Borbora, Assam’s first non-Congress Chief Minister. However, the highlight of the visit will be the Panchayat Sanmilan at Khanapara’s Veterinary College Playground, which the party has described as the sounding of the “war bugle” for the upcoming elections.
The convention is expected to bring together nearly 20,000 elected representatives from across the state. Of them, around 16,671 will be panchayat-level leaders from the BJP, along with over 1,500 members from its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). Representatives of the Rabha Hasong Joutha Sangram Samiti and Janashakti Party will also participate. Leaders from autonomous councils, including Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, have confirmed attendance. However, in view of the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, members from the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) will remain absent.
Das said that the convention will serve as a platform for grassroots workers to connect with the party’s top brass and to showcase the strength of the NDA alliance in Assam. “This will not only mark the beginning of preparations for 2026 but will also send a clear message of unity and determination to our workers and supporters,” he said.
