Megastar Amitabh Bachchan recently revealed that he is having trouble doing even the simplest of tasks like wearing trousers.
Although he is approaching 85 years, Amitabh Bachchan is in no mood to retire and continues to woo fans with his charming presence on and off screen. Recently, he launched the 17th edition of his much-loved television game show Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), marking his grand comeback on our small screens. With a massive fan base spanning multiple generations, Bachchan can undoubtedly be called one of the most accomplished actors in the history of Indian cinema.
Despite his efforts to stay young at heart, it seems that old age is finally catching up with Big B. Recently, he spoke about having trouble doing even the simplest of tasks like wearing trousers. The superstar also revealed that handlebars have been installed at his official residence, Jalsa. After the tradition of greeting fans who gather outside his house, Bachchan wrote a long note on his blog on Sunday, in which he expressed his feelings about the tradition. He also commented on his diminishing physical ability to do some normal things.
Stating that he still cannot believe that so many fans have gathered outside his house just to catch a glimpse of him, Big B revealed that it all seems real only when he actually sees them. He wrote, “As I climb the stairs to face them, a sense of reassurance fills my body and everyone’s cheers and reactions calm me down. Then the love and appreciation take over.” Stating that he also feels the absence of common faces, Bachchan said, “Am I too common and unwanted? Are they fed up of this 5-10 minute presence of people who have gathered since afternoon to get better? Why and what?”
He said the day’s routine is now governed by medicines and essentials, including mobility exercises in the gym to “talk and communicate properly”. He joked, “Some of the routines that were there earlier, it seems that since they were done a few years ago, it will be very easy to start them again. No, no baby! Just a day’s absence and both pain and mobility go for a very long walk.”
Talking about his difficulties with everyday tasks that used to seem easy earlier, Big B wrote, “It’s amazing how simple tasks that used to be easy now require a lot of thought before you do them. Even small tasks like putting on trousers. The doctor advises, ‘Please Mr Bachchan, sit down and put these on. Don’t try to stand up while wearing these… you might lose balance and fall.’ And inside, I smile in disbelief, until I realise that they were absolutely right.”
To help him with such tasks, he revealed that handlebars have been installed all over the house. You need them to hold on and steady your body before any physical activity. The simplest of these is bending to pick up a piece of paper blown off your table by a gust of wind. This courage tells you to keep going until you realise, ‘Oh my god, this is a big problem.’ The pace of its performance has slowed down with uncertainty.”
Expressing that none of his fans should have to go through such a phase in life, Bachchan said that such a time, however, will come for everyone. He further added, “The phase of decline begins from birth itself. Sad, but this is the truth of life. Youth faces the challenges of life with confidence. Age suddenly puts brakes on your car and tells you, ‘While driving the car of life, apply brakes to avoid sharp bumps.'”
