Amrita Hospital executes high-risk cardiac surgery for Nagaland patient

Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, has successfully performed a high-risk open-heart surgery on a 57-year-old patient from Nagaland, reaffirming its position as a leader in advanced, multi-disciplinary tertiary care. The patient, Mr. Akuminba, was battling multiple life-threatening conditions, including Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, chronic hypertension, severe renal dysfunction requiring dialysis, and Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS), compounded by a previously failed angioplasty.

Upon evaluation by Dr. Urmila Anandh, Head of Nephrology, dialysis was initiated, after which the patient was referred to Dr. Sameer Bhate, Senior Consultant and Head of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery. A complex Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) using three grafts was successfully completed, supported by a skilled team of cardiac anaesthetists and perfusionists. Despite a Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction of only 30–35% and vision loss from diabetic retinopathy, the patient is now stable and ambulatory.

Healthcare sector has responded with increased interest in high-end medical referrals to metro hospitals. Medical facilitators in the region are witnessing growing demand for specialized services, with Amrita Hospital emerging as a preferred choice for complex procedures. The patient is now being considered for a kidney transplant, reflecting a positive shift in prognosis and showcasing Amrita’s integrated approach to critical care.
