Changlang Honors Anglo-Singpho War Heroes as Vande Mataram Sesquicentennial Concludes

In a moving tribute to the warriors of the past, the Changlang district administration recently concluded a weeklong celebration marking the 150th anniversary of “Vande Mataram.” The finale, held at Kherem Birsa village, shifted the spotlight onto the often-overlooked history of the Anglo-Singpho War, honoring the legendary bravery of heroes Bom Singpho and Beesa Gaum. The closing ceremony was organized by the Changlang District Art and Culture Department and hosted at the residence of Singpho Chief Duwa Bisa Zaulung Raj Kumar. The choice of venue served as a powerful symbol of the community’s deep-rooted respect for its historical legacy. Among the dignitaries in attendance were Bordumsa ADC Suraj Gurung and Hydropower Executive Engineer Jhombom Geiyi, alongside several Gaon Buras and members of the local public.

The program commenced with a stirring mass rendition of the national song, “Vande Mataram,” followed by the ceremonial unfurling of the national flag. During the event, District Art and Culture Officer Dusu D. Genda took the opportunity to reflect on the yearlong celebrations, with a particular focus on the “Shaheedi Diwas” phase, which honors the sacrifices of India’s martyrs.

A key highlight of the day was an address by District Research Officer Debotang Yupang, who detailed the vital contributions of Singpho heroes to the Indian freedom movement. By recounting the stories of Bom Singpho and Beesa Gaum, the program sought to ensure that the resistance of these local leaders against colonial forces is recognized as an integral part of the national narrative of independence.

The “Shaheedi Diwas” week featured a variety of engaging activities designed to involve the entire community. These included an inter-college quiz competition and a unique rendition of “Vande Mataram” performed in the local Ponthai Tangsa dialect, showcasing the fusion of national pride with regional identity. Additionally, a signature campaign themed “Every Mark Matters” was conducted with the participation of local women’s self-help groups, further strengthening the grassroots connection to the celebration. As the 150th-year celebrations of “Vande Mataram” come to a close in Changlang, the legacy of the Singpho warriors remains a source of inspiration, reminding the state of the profound sacrifices made by its unsung heroes in the pursuit of liberty.
