Taragiri, the fourth ship of the Nilgiri Class (Project 17A), was delivered to the Indian Navy on 28 Nov 2025, highlighting a significant advancement in India’s self-reliance in warship construction. This modern frigate, a successor to the previously decommissioned INS Taragiri, showcases substantial improvements in naval design and capabilities, including stealth, firepower, and automation.
Designed by the Warship Design Bureau, Taragiri features an advanced weapon and sensor suite including BrahMos missiles and a combined propulsion system. Its build period was reduced to 81 months due to lessons learned from earlier ships, with further deliveries planned by Aug 2026. The project, involving a 75% indigenous content, supports over 4,000 direct jobs and strengthens India’s maritime defense capabilities.
