Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, the Director General of Assam Rifles, visited Nagaland on Thursday to evaluate the operational preparedness of the paramilitary force and to assess ongoing security efforts under the strategically important Dimapur sector. The visit, described as a key initiative by the Assam Rifles, aimed at reviewing the challenges and ground realities faced by the deployed units. A press release from the force stated that the Director General’s assessment focused on enhancing internal security operations and fostering long-term stability in the region, which has seen intermittent tensions over the years.
During the visit, Lt Gen Lakhera met with Nagaland Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio to discuss the broader security landscape and stressed the vital role of civil-military cooperation in maintaining peace and development in the Northeast. Their dialogue emphasized coordinated efforts between the armed forces and civil administration to ensure security in sensitive areas. Lt Gen Lakhera also carried out a ground-level inspection at Kashiram Basti in Dimapur district, where he interacted with troops engaged in active duty. Praising their discipline, dedication, and professional conduct, he encouraged personnel to remain alert and committed to their duties.
In his address to the troops, the Director General reaffirmed the Assam Rifles’ mission to not only safeguard borders and maintain law and order but also to act as a bridge between the security forces and the local communities. “Winning hearts and minds of the people is as important as securing territory,” he said, urging the force to continue strengthening ties with local populations. He underlined the importance of trust-building measures with the civilian population, particularly in areas where development is still catching up with the rest of the country. Civil-military cooperation, he noted, was crucial for enabling peacebuilding and ensuring inclusive progress. The Assam Rifles, often called the ‘Sentinels of the Northeast’, has been at the forefront of counter-insurgency operations and humanitarian assistance in the region. Under Lt Gen Lakhera’s leadership, the force continues to evolve its role, balancing security duties with active involvement in developmental and welfare programs.
