Former finance secretary of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Jayanta Khaund today joined the Congress along with his supporters at a function in Delhi in the presence of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and Congress in charge for Assam Jitendra Singh.
Speaking on the occasion, Gaurav Gogoi said, “Jayanta Khaund contacted us a few days ago expressing his wish to join the Congress party. Today we are happy to induct him and his coworkers into the party. Today, a wave is rising in Assam against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the way he is acting arbitrarily, promoting incompetent people in politics, and the way he is sidelining those who have worked hard in active politics for so many years. He is keeping with him only those who are involved in corruption.”
Congress in charge for Assam, Bhanwar Jitendra Singh says, “Soon after BJP came to power, it started finishing the regional parties and the identity of Assam, like they do in every other state of the country. Look at what happened in Odisha. We can see what happened in Bihar and Maharashtra. They have been trying to end AGP for 10 years and now they have shortened the party list significantly. We welcome Jayanta Khaund and his fellow workers.”
Jayanta Khaund had resigned from the AGP on March 6. According to sources, he was hopeful of contesting from the Ronganadi seat, but when the AGP conceded the constituency was to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the seat-sharing arrangement, he decided to quit.
Khaund had expressed his dissatisfaction, saying that serving the AGP for many years bore no benefit for him. With his future still uncertain, he decided to join the Congress.
,Khaund remarked that the people of Assam did not wish to see Himanta Biswa Sarma as the Chief Minister of the state for a second term.
Having joined the party now, there is a strong possibility that he could be Congress candidate from Ronganadi.
