From Diet to Data: Blood Sugar Control Using Technology

Managing diabetes is becoming more personalised with technology bridging the gap between diet and data. Experts say smart nutrition choices, backed by tools like Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) devices, can help individuals make informed decisions about their meals.

Unlike traditional finger pricks or HbA1c tests, CGMs deliver automatic glucose readings every minute on smartphones, with alerts for high or low levels, enabling quicker responses. Dr Samiran Das, DM Endo, Nemcare Super Speciality Hospital, Guwahati, said rapidly digestible carbs can spike blood sugar, but “CGM devices and food-tracking apps now allow people to see the real-time impact of food and share data with doctors—critical when in-person visits are difficult.”

In Guwahati’s growing health-conscious sector, demand for CGMs, low-GI foods, and sugar substitutes is rising. Pharmacies report increasing sales of smart health devices, while grocery outlets are stocking more diabetic-friendly snacks, reflecting a shift in consumer preferences.  Abbott’s Dr Vivek Iyer noted, “With smart tech and mindful nutrition, everyday choices become easier—whether tweaking recipes or grabbing a snack.” Experts advise counting carbs, choosing smarter sugar swaps, using CGMs for tracking, and selecting nutrient-dense snacks to keep blood sugar steady, even when dining out.
