Nagaland plunged into grief on Friday following the passing of its Governor, La Ganesan, who breathed his last at Apollo Hospital, Chennai, on August 15, 2025. The news of his demise spread swiftly, drawing an outpouring of sorrow and tributes from political leaders, government officials, and citizens across the state and beyond.
Governor Ganesan, remembered as a dedicated public servant, had served the people in multiple capacities during his long career in politics and governance. His death, at the age of 79, marked the end of a life deeply committed to public service, where he shouldered responsibilities both within his home state of Tamil Nadu and in the northeastern region of India.
In a mark of respect, the Government of Nagaland has declared a seven-day State mourning from August 16 to 22, 2025. During this period, the National Flag will fly at half-mast across all government establishments where it is regularly hoisted. The notification was formally issued by Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen, IAS, underscoring the solemnity of the occasion. “As a sign of deepest respect to the departed soul, no official entertainment will be held during this period,” the notification stated.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio was among the first to extend his condolences. In a heartfelt message, he expressed sorrow at the passing of the Governor, describing him as a leader who brought dignity and wisdom to his role. “Governor La Ganesan’s tenure, though brief, left a lasting impression on the state. His guidance and warmth will be missed dearly. I extend my deepest condolences to his family in this hour of grief,” Rio said.
