Nagaland is reeling under the impact of relentless monsoon rains that have triggered landslides and widespread flooding, severely affecting daily life in the state’s capital Kohima and its commercial hub, Dimapur. The continuous downpour over the past several days has disrupted traffic, damaged property, and forced authorities to issue public advisories for safety. In Kohima, heavy rainfall led to two major landslide incidents within 24 hours.
On Friday, the retaining wall of the Soil and Water Conservation Department collapsed, followed by a similar incident on Saturday at the Nagaland Police Headquarters. According to officials, at least four vehicles were damaged as debris rolled down onto roads and nearby properties. The landslides have added to the woes of residents already struggling with daily waterlogging and blocked roads. Several areas in Kohima town were submerged under rainwater, with stagnant pools forming in low-lying neighbourhoods, making pedestrian and vehicular movement extremely difficult. Municipal workers and disaster response teams have been deployed to clear debris and assist in emergency measures.
“We are witnessing one of the heaviest rain spells in recent years. The ground is saturated, and more landslides could occur if this continues,” said an official from the Kohima Disaster Management Cell. In Dimapur, the situation is no less alarming. Torrential rains have inundated several parts of the city, especially low-lying colonies such as United Colony (Nagarjan), Sachu Colony, Zeliangrongram Colony, and Burma Camp. These areas remained submerged for most of Saturday, with stagnant water disrupting normal life and creating serious health and hygiene concerns.
