Himanta Biswa Sarma visits the 3,400 MW thermal plant in Dhubri

A 3,400 MW thermal power plant was recently planned at Chirakuta Charuwa Bakra in Dhubri district, which Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited. The previous plan in Kokrajhar was abandoned due to protests over tribal land concerns. To determine its appropriateness for the state’s main power project, the CM examined the site, which spans over 3,300 bighas under the Bilasipara subdivision. Assam’s energy demand is predicted to increase to 5,000 MW by 2030 and 7,000 MW by 2035, and the proposed plant is anticipated to be a major contributor to meeting this need.

Sarma promised that all eligible landholders would receive compensation and rehabilitation in line with government policy while interacting with locals during the visit. “We’re determined to make sure that this development doesn’t hurt anyone. Grants for rehabilitation will be given in accordance with standards, the CM stated. To promote significant investments in the industry, the state cabinet passed the Assam Thermal Power Generation Project Promotion Policy 2025 in May.

According to Sarma, the 3,400 MW plant will soon be open for bids, and the project would create thousands of direct and indirect job possibilities for young people in the area. It’s noteworthy that the government had originally intended to locate the plant at Kokrajhar. However, the project was abandoned due to strong opposition from the residents who claimed it would infringe on tribal land. The Chief Minister stated that a significant milestone in the development of Assam’s power infrastructure will probably be reached in November 2025, with the foundation stone being placed at the new location in Dhubri.
