Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will inaugurate the 22nd annual conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Zone-III in Nagaland’s capital Kohima today. The two-day event aims to strengthen democratic cooperation, legislative dialogue, and regional collaboration among the northeastern states. The conference, being hosted by the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, carries the theme “Policy, Progress and People: Legislatures as Catalysts of Change.” It will bring together presiding officers, legislators, and officials from eight northeastern states to exchange ideas and discuss policy priorities that can shape the region’s future.
Prominent leaders attending the event include Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, and Nagaland Assembly Speaker and CPA Zone-III Chairman Sharingain Longkumer. The presence of Om Birla and other senior lawmakers underlines the importance of this conference as a platform for fostering legislative best practices and strengthening the roots of democracy in the region.
Discussions during the conference will focus on two major sub-themes — the role of legislatures in achieving Viksit Bharat (Developed India) and addressing the growing challenges posed by climate change. Given the recent natural calamities such as cloudbursts and landslides across the Northeast, participants are expected to explore legislative measures and regional strategies to improve disaster preparedness and environmental resilience.
