Dr. G. Viswanathan, Chancellor of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), highlighted the crucial role of education in driving India’s economic growth and achieving developed nation status by 2047 during the 40th Convocation Ceremony on Saturday. Supreme Court Justice R. Mahadevan, the chief guest, awarded degrees to 8,310 undergraduates, 2,802 postgraduates, and 451 doctoral students. Sixty-eight students received gold medals for exceptional performance, while 203 were recognized for academic rankings.
Notable attendees included Tamil Nadu Police Academy Director DGP Sandeep Rai Rathore, awarded a Ph.D. in Disaster Management, and Times of India CEO Sivakumar Sundaram as guest of honor. The ceremony also saw the inauguration of hostels named after Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Jagadish Chandra Bose.
Dr. Viswanathan called for increasing India’s education expenditure to 6% of GDP from the current 3% and stressed expanding infrastructure to achieve the National Education Policy’s 50% Gross Enrollment Ratio target. He urged students to fight corruption and black money to support sustainable economic growth.
Justice Mahadevan lauded VIT’s technological integration in academics and research, urging students to uphold ethical values while contributing to India’s growth trajectory.
