Kahikuchi Horticulture Station celebrates World Environment Day with mahogany plantation drive

The Horticulture Research Station at Kahikuchi, Guwahati, marked World Environment Day 2025 with a series of eco-focused activities. Spearheaded by Chief Scientist Dr. Sunil Kumar Borah, the programme gathered all scientists and employees of the station for a meaningful observance.

Dr. Borah opened the event by underlining the critical link between human existence and plant life, emphasizing the vital ecosystem services provided by nature. He also called for a firm stand against single-use plastics, aligning with this year’s World Environment Day theme that promotes reducing plastic pollution.

To commemorate the day, ten mahogany seedlings were planted on the station campus. The plantation drive saw active participation from senior scientists including Dr. Dhiren Choudhury, Dr. Kusum Kr. Deka, Dr. Jayanta Kr. Sharma, Dr. Kaberi Mahanta, and Dr. Seema Bhagowati.

A sustainability pledge was also taken by all attendees, reinforcing the station’s commitment to protecting the environment for future generations. The initiative showcases how research institutions are playing a crucial role in promoting green practices and building climate resilience through science-backed action.
