Kohima gears up for 24th Dr. T. Ao Trophy football championship

All eyes are on Kohima as Nagaland prepares to host the 24th edition of the Dr. T. Ao Trophy Inter-District Football Championship, a flagship sporting event that celebrates not just athletic prowess but also the cultural spirit and unity of the Naga people. The tournament, organized by the Nagaland Football Association (NFA) and hosted by the Kohima District Football Association (KDFA), kicks off today at the Indira Gandhi Stadium and will run until August 15. More than just a football tournament, the Dr. T. Ao Trophy has become a symbol of community pride, youth empowerment, and regional identity. The event is named in honor of Dr. Talimeren Ao, the first Naga to captain the Indian football team and a revered figure in the state’s sporting history.MLA Kevipodi Sophie, convener of the organising committee, said preparations are in full swing to ensure a seamless and festive tournament. “This is more than a sporting event—it is a celebration of Naga unity. Through such platforms, we come together as one family,” he remarked during a press interaction.

The opening ceremony will be graced by Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who is expected to deliver the keynote address. Members of the late Dr. T. Ao’s family will also be present to pay tribute to his legacy. The ceremony will feature cultural performances, including a special set by popular Naga rapper Moko Koza and the acclaimed folk group Seyie Intrepid, setting the tone for a celebration that blends sports with culture.In a welcoming gesture to the public, entry to the stadium will be free on the opening day, with special bus services running from High School Junction to facilitate public attendance. “We want everyone to be part of this celebration, especially the youth,” said KDFA President Mhasimhalie Mathew Yhome.Seventeen districts from across Nagaland will compete in the championship, showcasing a mix of seasoned professionals and emerging talent. Kohima’s team, led by Barak FC captain Kevisanyü Peseyie, who was recently crowned NSL Player of the Tournament, is considered one of the strong contenders. Several players from the Nagaland Super League (NSL) and a promising group of under-20 athletes have bolstered the team’s chances.
