The Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) Committee on Environment and Climate Change (CoE&CC) has raised a serious alarm after inspecting three major rivers in Kohima—Dzüvürü, Vürierü, and Sanuorü—which have turned into dumping grounds.
Led by committee chairman Achumbemo Kikon, the inspection team, including MLAs Mhathung Yanthan, Hekani Jakhalu, Zhaleo Rio, and others, found plastic waste, untreated sewage, and hazardous materials polluting the rivers. “This is a wake-up call. These rivers, once lifelines, are now being choked by neglect,” Kikon said.
The committee, formed in February 2025, aims to tackle environmental issues across Nagaland. Kikon stressed the need for public awareness and cooperation, stating, “We can’t aspire to be like Singapore while polluting our rivers.”Advisor for Urban Development Zhaleo Rio revealed plans to include the Sanuorü river in a wastewater treatment project. He said the pollution worsens during dry seasons, despite rainfall washing away some waste.
