Nagaland remembers Kargil Hero Capt. Kengurüse on Martyrdom Day

The spirit of patriotism and sacrifice echoed through the hills of Nagaland on Saturday as the Indian Army and Assam Rifles solemnly observed the 26th Martyrdom Day of Captain Neikezhakuo Kengurüse, Maha Vir Chakra (Posthumous), at the Kengurüse War Memorial in Nerhe Phezha, Kohima district. The commemorative event paid homage to one of India’s bravest soldiers, affectionately remembered as the “Hero of Nagaland,” who laid down his life in the 1999 Kargil War.

The ceremony was attended by a wide cross-section of society, including senior defence officers, veterans, civil dignitaries, students, and villagers. Major General Manish Kumar, SM*, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North), presided over the event as the Chief Guest. He was joined by the late Captain’s proud parents, Mr. and Mrs. Neiselie Kengurüse, along with other family members, ex-servicemen from Wokha and Kohima, and serving personnel from the armed forces.

The proceedings began with the lighting of the Amar Jawan Jyoti and laying of floral wreaths, in honour of the young officer who displayed exceptional valour while fighting for the nation at a young age. A moving documentary was screened, recounting Captain Kengurüse’s life, training, battlefield heroics, and the values he lived by — courage, honour, and service.

Personnel from the 2 Rajputana Rifles, the battalion Capt Kengurüse served in, and soldiers from 5/5 Gorkha Rifles, who were also posted in the Kargil sector during the war, extended heartfelt pleasantries to his family, underscoring the deep respect the armed forces continue to hold for their fallen comrade.

The event also featured a stirring marchpast by girl cadets of the 1 Naga Battalion, followed by ex-servicemen parading with pride. The performances of the Assam Rifles Pipe Band and the Fernbrook School Band added a solemn and patriotic tone to the gathering.

A felicitation ceremony was held to honour the martyr’s parents, celebrating their strength, resilience, and the immense contribution of their son to the nation’s freedom and security. In a moving and symbolic act of service, Mr. Neiselie Kengurüse inaugurated the “Capt N Kengurüse, MVC Medical Camp,” a special community outreach initiative organised by the Assam Rifles for local residents.

One of the highlights of the day was the unveiling of a biography titled ‘Nimbu Saaab’, a tribute to Captain Kengurüse’s legacy. The book was co-authored by his elder brother, Mr. Neingthoulie Kengurüse, and narrates intimate stories of the Captain’s early life, training, and supreme sacrifice during the Kargil conflict.
