Nagaland University has introduced a postgraduate course in Rural Development and Management, aiming to build a new generation of professionals dedicated to uplifting rural and tribal communities in Nagaland and across the North Eastern Region. University officials confirmed the launch of the programme on Monday, stating that the course is designed to address the pressing challenges and emerging opportunities in rural governance, economic empowerment, natural resource management, and sustainable development. “With over 70 per cent of Nagaland’s population residing in rural areas, the need for a well-structured and holistic rural development strategy has become critical,” said Prof. Jagdish Patnaik, Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University. “This course will equip students with the necessary tools and knowledge to not only understand rural India but also become active participants in its transformation.”
The two-year programme, launched under the Department of Rural Development and Planning, was approved during the university’s 40th Academic Council meeting. It will initially admit 20 students, ensuring focused mentorship and hands-on learning. According to university sources, the programme will blend theoretical learning with practical field exposure, covering key areas such as rural economy, local governance systems, community participation, policy implementation, and livelihood planning. The aim is to enable students to engage meaningfully with local communities and work in tandem with government and non-governmental bodies for holistic development. “This is more than just an academic course,” Prof. Patnaik explained. “It is a strategic intervention that aligns with the state and national vision for inclusive rural development, particularly in geographically and socially unique regions like the Northeast.”
The course opens up diverse career pathways for graduates in government agencies, non-profits, rural enterprises, research institutions, and developmental consultancies, along with opportunities for entrepreneurship and community leadership. Applications for the programme are open until July 20, with a PG entrance test scheduled for July 28, 2025, for non-CUET candidates. Officials added that the university is expecting a strong response from aspirants passionate about social change and sustainable development.
