Nalbari is the leader in Assam’s tree planting, having planted more than 1.7 million trees since 2023

According to official data, the Nalbari district has become a leader in Assam’s green movement, planting over 1.7 million seedlings since 2023 as part of environmental projects conducted by the state and federal governments. In 2024 alone, 16,96,220 seedlings were planted throughout the area, according to data from the Nalbari Social Forestry Division. This represents an almost fivefold increase over the 3,47,991 saplings planted the year before. Students, women’s self-help groups, and community organizations participated widely in these plantation efforts, which were part of national and state-led campaigns like Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and Amrit Brikshya Andolan.

Educational institutions have made the most contribution. Through the Amrit Brikshya Andolan, Nalbari’s schools and colleges planted more than 50,000 seedlings, indicating a focused effort to teach youth environmental responsibility. Just 34,035 of these saplings were found in elementary and middle schools. The district also saw an increase in support for the national government’s Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign, which was introduced on World Environment Day in 2023. In an effort to encourage people to plant trees in honor of their moms, 80,053 seedlings have been planted so far.

In 2023, over 94% of saplings in Nalbari, Assam, survived due to regular maintenance and fencing by the Social Forestry Division. A special plantation drive in Madhapur saw a 100% survival rate, demonstrating the deep-rooted environmental awareness in communities. The initiative, involving women from self-help groups, ranked first in Assam during Amrit Brikshya Andolan 2024. Local NGOs played a crucial role in the success. The program has also fostered civic pride and ownership among children.
