Northeast’s pride: Dr. Gayatri Gogoi recognized among India’s top medical researchers

Dr. Gayatri Gogoi, an adjunct researcher at ICMR North East and associate professor at AMCH, received the Blackbuck Pioneer Researcher Award 2025 in recognition of her groundbreaking work in cancer research. Gogoi, a renowned physician and researcher from Assam, has been making a significant contribution to the Northeast’s quest for knowledge and education. The prize was given out on August 10 at a research summit hosted by the National Medical Forum and Medical Dialogue, the biggest medical news group, in Delhi. Dr. Abhijat Sheth, the chairperson of the National Medical Commission, and Prof. Ashok Puranik, the executive director of AIIMS Guwahati, were present. Top physicians from various regions of India, the dean of Maulana Azad Medical College, the head of cardiology at PGI Chandigarh, and the former director general of ICMR made up the judging panel for award selection.

Dr. Gogoi has won multiple national honors for her outstanding work in academia and research, as well as for her many efforts to help cancer patients and their families. One of these honors is the highly regarded worldwide award for excellence in cancer care, which she received in North Carolina, USA. Through her book chapters, more than 50 research publications in peer-reviewed journals, and medical textbooks, Dr. Gogoi made a substantial impact. She is a member of several prestigious international organizations, including the Genomic Consortium of North East India, the American Association for Cancer Research, and the College of American Pathologist as an International Fellow. With five projects still in progress from IISC Bangalore, AIIMS Delhi, IIT Guwahati, Tezpur Central University, and ICMR North East, she and her team have completed eight projects. She created numerous community-focused initiatives that are currently operating effectively as an honorary member of the Pratishruti Cancer and Palliative Trust. Along with physicians and scientists from AIIMS Delhi, ICMR, Apollo Hospitals, Medanta, and other institutions, she was the sole physician from Northeast India to be awarded the Pioneer Medical Researcher Award on the platform.

During the program, Harsh Malhotra, Union MoS Corporate Affairs and Road Transport, and Dr. Abhijat Sheth, Chairperson of the National Medical Commission, were in attendance. This summit’s goal was to improve research ecosystems so that India may become a global innovator in medical devices and kits rather than merely a consumer.
