Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remembrance of Ahom general Lachit Barphukan in Parliament sparked overwhelming pride from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who described it as a historic event for Assam. CM Sharma wrote on social media, “It is a matter of great pride for Assam that for the first time in the temple of democracy, the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modiji, has remembered the bravery of Lachit Barphukan along with other heroes of Maa Bharati.”
He commended Modi for being the first prime minister to consistently work to raise awareness of the memory of the renowned warrior across the country. Modi has become one of Assam’s “great cultural ambassadors,” according to Sarma, who has unveiled a towering statue in Lachit’s honor, reoriented school curricula to incorporate his life, and commemorated his birth’s 400th anniversary on a national level. The Chief Minister underlined Assam’s illustrious past and the contributions made by its heroes to the country, saying that such acknowledgment was long needed.
