Sarbananda Sonowal announces two luxury cruises for Brahmaputra River

For the Brahmaputra River, the central government will send out two opulent cruise ships valued at Rs 250 crore. In addition, 100 barges—cargo vessels—will be in service in the Ganga, Barak, and Brahmaputra. This was said by Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW), during a road show in Guwahati that served as a prelude to India Maritime Week 2025. “Two luxury cruise ships are being built at a combined investment of Rs 250 crore for deployment on the Brahmaputra River,” Sonowal told reporters here.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will give the keynote presentation at the Global Maritime CEO Forum during the forthcoming “India Maritime Week” in Mumbai, which takes place from October 27 to October 31, 2025, according to Sonowal. Participating in the Water Voyage Northeast 2025 roadshow today, Sonowal called it “a historic opportunity to showcase India’s maritime strength to the world,” with over 100 countries and 100,000 stakeholders anticipated to attend. India Maritime Week 2025 will showcase investment opportunities worth nearly Rs 1 trillion, including shipbuilding clusters, port-led connectivity, coastal community development, and eco-friendly logistics.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of India as a trusted partner and rising maritime power will inspire global industry leaders to invest in India’s growth story. With more than Rs 1,000 crore spent on inland waterway development, the Northeast’s contribution to the maritime agenda is emphasized. The minister also emphasized India’s ambitious goal of handling 10,000 MMT of EXIM cargo and 500 MMT through inland waterways by 2047, making it one of the world’s top five shipbuilding nations.
