Security forces nab 2 Manipuris with Rs 7 crore heroin in Assam

An inter-state drug cartel was busted with the arrest of two peddlers from Manipur, from whom heroin worth over Rs 7 crore was seized, in Assam’s Kamrup district, police said on Wednesday. Police said they received a tip-off that drugs would be transported from Churachandpur in Manipur to a lower Assam district via Kamrup in a car. “Based on the input, the vehicle was intercepted in the early hours by STF at Amingaon and recovered 74 soap boxes of heroin, weighing 910 grams, which were hidden in door panels and dickey of the vehicle,” a police officer said.

A thorough search led to the recovery of 74 soap boxes containing heroin, weighing approximately 910 grams (excluding packaging). The contraband had been cleverly concealed inside the car’s door panels and rear compartment. Two individuals — Gogou Suantak (33), son of Thangneinak Suantak of Sheiphei village, PS Sangaikot, and Seilun Vaiphei (39), son of Thangkho Vaiphei of Makhao village, PS Sangaikot — both from Churachandpur district, were arrested in connection with the seizure.

The estimated market value of the narcotics is pegged at Rs 8 crore. Legal proceedings have been initiated against the accused under the NDPS Act. The operation, led by Kalyan Kumar Pathak, Additional Superintendent of Police (HQ), Kamrup, is being seen as a major breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown on inter-state drug trafficking networks.
