Susmit ‘Bob’ Nath of Silchar Bags Filmfare OTT Award for Best Sound Design

Silchar’s Susmit ‘Bob’ Nath has brought national recognition to his hometown by winning the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Sound Design for the acclaimed web series Stolen (2023). The award was presented on December 15 at a ceremony held in Mumbai.

A taut thriller starring Abhishek Banerjee, Stolen has been widely appreciated for its gripping narrative and mood-driven storytelling, in which sound plays a defining role. Nath’s sound design was praised for its subtle layering, minimalistic background score and immersive audio landscape, effectively using silence and understated sound cues to heighten tension and emotional impact.

Hailing from Vivekananda Road in Silchar, Nath completed his schooling at Silchar Collegiate School and later studied at GC College. His interest in music began early, and he was once associated with a local band before discovering his passion for sound design. Due to financial constraints, he moved to Delhi and worked at a call centre for nearly three years. Despite career stability, he chose to follow his creative calling and appeared for the FTII entrance examination, clearing it on his first attempt.

Nath pursued a diploma in Sound Recording and Engineering at the Film and Television Institute of India between 2007 and 2012. He credits the institute with shaping his artistic sensibilities and exposing him to independent cinema and global film movements.

Over the years, Nath has built an impressive portfolio, contributing to Oscar-nominated documentaries such as Writing With Fire and All That Breathes. His work has been showcased at leading international film festivals, including Cannes, Sundance, Toronto and Venice, inspiring aspiring creatives from Silchar, the Barak Valley and the wider Northeast
