Tension in Beldanga, Rail and Road Blocked Over Mystery Death

Protests in Beldanga disrupted transport as angry locals blocked rail tracks and highways following the mysterious death of Murshidabad resident Alaudddin Sheikh, who had travelled to work in another state. From Friday morning, hundreds of people blocked railway lines near Maheshpur station and the National Highway 12. Local trains including the Hazarika Express came to a halt, and dozens of buses and trucks were stranded. For nearly five and a half hours, rail and road connectivity between North and South Bengal remained almost cut off.

Sensing the seriousness of the situation, Murshidabad District Superintendent of Police Sani Raj and senior administrative officers arrived at the spot. After prolonged discussions, protesters agreed to withdraw the blockade. Train and bus services slowly resumed. Police officials said that an investigation into the labourer’s death has already begun and justice for the family will be ensured.
During the chaos, several incidents of vandalism and clashes were reported. A traffic kiosk and police vehicles were damaged. At least 12 people were injured, including several journalists.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged the public to remain calm, assuring that the state government stands by the deceased worker’s family.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury criticised the state, claiming that lack of employment forces workers to migrate and fall victim to such tragic deaths.
