Tesla is set to launch its first India store, an “experience centre” in Mumbai, marking the company’s first physical presence in India, according to Reuters.
Tesla has signed a lease deal to open its first showroom in Mumbai, India, and has already brought five Model Y vehicles from Shanghai to Mumbai, subject to import duties of over 2.1 million rupees, following India’s 70% tariff on fully-built cars.
Tesla, the electric vehicle company, has been negotiating with India for years to lower import duties. However, Union Minister for Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy stated that Tesla only wants to expand showrooms in India and is not interested in manufacturing parts.
