The report “Skills for the Future: Transforming India’s Workforce Landscape” is unveiled by Hon. Minister Shri Jayant Chaudhary

Minister of State (I/C) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and MoS for Education, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, unveiled a landmark report titled “Skills for the Future: Transforming India’s Workforce Landscape” in New Delhi. Developed independently by the Institute for Competitiveness, the report provides an in-depth, data-driven analysis of India’s skilling ecosystem using the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2023–24.

The report reveals that 88% of India’s workforce is engaged in low-competency occupations, with only 10–12% in high-skilled roles. It identifies five high-impact sectors—IT & ITeS, Textile & Apparel, Electronics, Healthcare & Life Sciences, and Beauty & Wellness—as leading in vocational training. Minister Chaudhary stressed the need for a demand-driven, industry-aligned skilling model and proposed a national employability index to track outcomes.

In Guwahati, industry players in healthcare and electronics see immense potential for aligning local talent with national skilling frameworks. With growing demand in the Northeast, Guwahati could emerge as a regional skilling hub if programs are tailored to local industry needs. The report calls for better data systems, industry accountability, and incentivized hiring from certified talent pools to build a resilient, future-ready workforce.
