With their bronze at the National Tug of War Championship, Nagaland ladies make history

Nagaland etched a new chapter in its sporting history as the state’s women’s tug of war team clinched the bronze medal in the 500 Kg Senior Women’s category at the 38th National Tug of War Championship, held at the Sai Baba Educational Complex in Shirdi, Maharashtra. This was Nagaland women’s maiden appearance at the prestigious national event, making their podium finish even more remarkable. In the medal-deciding clash, the spirited Nagaland team overpowered Uttar Pradesh, registering a straight win in both pulling rounds and securing the bronze medal. The achievement has been hailed across Nagaland as a historic breakthrough for women in sports, particularly in disciplines that often go unnoticed. Team Manager Kuzhovesa Soho called the medal “a testimony of good things to come,” attributing the victory to God’s blessings and the collective support extended to the team.

“This success is not ours alone. It belongs to everyone who stood behind us. We are deeply grateful for the prayers, encouragement, and unwavering faith of the people of Nagaland,” Soho said. The participation of the Nagaland women’s team was made possible through the personal support of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who funded the entire expenses for their journey and stay. Expressing heartfelt gratitude, Soho said, “Without his support, this dream would not have been possible. We pray that God continues to bless our Chief Minister for his enthusiasm and vision in promoting youth and sports.”

The team credited their success to Coach Vemele Thingo, whose tireless efforts in training and motivating the players were instrumental in their spirited performance. They also thanked Dr. Er. Vekho Swuro, President of the Nagaland Tug of War Association (NTWA), for ensuring logistical support and facilitating smooth preparations ahead of the championship.
