Wokha Administration Moves to Regulate Parking for Better Urban Mobility

The Office of the Deputy Commissioner has issued a new order aimed at addressing urban mobility, enhancing public safety, and improving disaster preparedness in Wokha town, Nagaland, due to escalating traffic congestion and unchecked parking practices. Following a previous notification, Deputy Commissioner Vineet Kumar highlighted the urgency of implementing a regulated parking system, noting a significant increase in vehicles alongside a growing shortage of public space. He pointed out the emergence of several commercial buildings lacking adequate parking facilities for both patrons and employees, which has led to the misuse of public areas for haphazard parking, resulting in severe traffic congestion, constrained pedestrian movement, and obstructed emergency access.

Concerns regarding public safety have escalated, particularly during emergencies where timely access for ambulances and firefighting services are paramount. Consequently, the district administration has mandated swift corrective actions to alleviate these issues, setting a deadline of January 31, 2026. During this period, private and commercial car owners currently utilizing public spaces for parking must find alternative arrangements within 45 days. Furthermore, prospective car buyers are advised to take parking availability into account prior to their purchases.

The order stipulates that it is now compulsory for retail centers, businesses, and all new constructions to include adequate parking facilities. In alignment with the Municipal Act, the Town Council has been tasked with expediting the approval process for new commercial buildings in compliance with this requirement. Starting February 1, 2026, parking along the National Highway traversing Wokha town will undergo stringent monitoring. A task force composed of members from various departments, including the Town Council, Transport Office, Police, Administration, and Traffic Department, will be established to ensure enforcement. Moreover, a thorough review of parking arrangements on municipal roads will be conducted in partnership with the Traffic Police, allowing for the identification and regulation of appropriate parking zones to guarantee unimpeded access for emergency vehicles.
