Two men have been arrested in connection with an alleged racial attack on a woman doctor from Nagaland posted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Gorakhpur in Gorakhpur.The incident reportedly took place on the evening of February 22 near Gate No. 2 of the institute. The victim is a third-year resident doctor specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology. According to her complaint, she was returning to the campus from a mall around 8 pm when three men began following her.She alleged that the men trailed her for nearly 1.5 kilometres while passing obscene remarks and racial slurs targeting her Northeastern background. The doctor stated that the accused accosted her near the institute gate. She further alleged that one of the men removed his shirt in an attempt to intimidate her, while another touched her inappropriately.
The doctor said she raised an alarm and managed to run towards a nearby security post. However, in a statement later shared on social media, she claimed that after initially escaping, she again saw the same men near Gate No. 2 of the hospital premises, where they allegedly misbehaved and threatened her.Police have identified the accused as Suraj Gupta and Amrit Vishwakarma, both residents of Deoria district in Uttar Pradesh. Two of the three alleged assailants have been arrested, while efforts are underway to trace and arrest the third accused.Based on the complaint, a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions related to assault or use of criminal force to outrage modesty, obscene acts, and intentional insult intended to provoke a breach of peace.The National Federation of Resident Doctors strongly condemned the incident. In a statement, the federation said the episode reflects the “deep shock, humiliation and trauma” faced by the resident doctor. It also alleged that the attackers made racially discriminatory remarks aimed at her identity.
The incident has raised concern among medical professionals and students. Many have called for stronger security measures on and around hospital campuses, especially for women doctors and staff returning during evening hours. Police said further investigation is underway and appropriate action will be taken as per law.
