One of the oldest schools in Kohima has been upgraded to a Government High School, 72 years after it was first established in 1954.Daklane Government School was officially upgraded on February 27. The school had been functioning as Government Middle School (GMS) Daklane, offering classes from Class 6 to Class 8. With the latest upgradation, students can now continue their studies up to Class 10 in the same institution. The school was first set up in 1954 and was upgraded to a middle school in 2002. The demand for a high school in the area had been pending for many years. Residents of the locality had repeatedly raised the need for higher classes within the colony so that students would not have to travel far for secondary education.Attending the upgradation ceremony, Salhoutuonuo Kruse, Minister for Women Resource Development and Horticulture, described the occasion as an important day for Kohima. She said the school is among the oldest institutions in the town and that its upgradation was a long-felt need, especially considering its central location.
She stressed that government schools play a key role in providing free and accessible education to children from all sections of society. She said such schools have qualified teachers and give students an opportunity to study near their homes while remaining competitive. The minister also credited the state government led by Neiphiu Rio for taking steps to strengthen educational infrastructure across Nagaland.Kruse called education an investment in the future and urged students to make good use of the opportunity. She also encouraged teachers to carry out their duties with sincerity and dedication. Advisor for School Education and SCERT, Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, said the upgradation marks a new beginning for the school. He said efforts are being made to improve government schools across the state. He also pointed out that public perception about government institutions needs to change, as many families still prefer private schools.
Officials informed that 22 students have been enrolled in Class 9 for the academic year 2026. With this addition, the total student strength has reached 204. The school is supported by 24 teachers, which officials said will help in delivering quality secondary education in the heart of Kohima.
