Two unidentified persons allegedly hurled two petrol bombs at Laban police station in Shillong in the early hours of Saturday, September 12, triggering a fire inside the police premises, officials said.
The incident took place at around 2.30 am when the two suspects arrived at the police station on a two-wheeler and allegedly threw the petrol bombs before fleeing the area.
Meghalaya Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said no police personnel were injured in the incident. The fire caused by the petrol bombs was later brought under control by police personnel, preventing further damage to the premises.
“The two attackers arrived on a two-wheeler and threw two petrol bombs at around 2.30 am before fleeing the spot,” Syiem said.
The incident was captured by CCTV cameras installed at the police station. Police are now examining the footage in an attempt to identify the persons involved in the attack.
The petrol bombs, commonly referred to as Molotov cocktails, caused a fire within the police station premises. Police personnel responded to the incident and managed to douse the flames.
No arrests have been made so far, the superintendent of police said.
An investigation has been launched and police are examining CCTV footage along with other evidence collected from the scene. Investigators are also working to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify the motive behind it.
The motive has not yet been established. Police, however, have not ruled out the possible involvement of groups supporting the demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya.
