Mass Rally in Kohima Protests Mandatory ‘Vande Mataram’ Directive

A protest rally took place in Kohima on Monday against the mandatory imposition of the song Vande Mataram in educational institutions and official functions. Organized by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and held simultaneously in various districts, the rally featured participants expressing strong opposition with placards stating “No forced secularism” and “Naga rights are non-negotiable.” Key speakers, including NSF general secretary Kenilo Kent and members of the Naga People’s Movement for Human Rights, criticized the directive as an infringement on beliefs and identity, emphasizing that it contradicts the principles of secularism and religious freedom. The Nagaland Joint Christian Forum and other church leaders echoed these sentiments, arguing that the song’s Hindu imagery conflicts with Christian values. The NSF president underscored the importance of respecting the identity of the Naga people and their beliefs, framing the issue as one of conscience and minority rights. The rally culminated in the submission of a memorandum to the President of India through the Governor of Nagaland.
