Dimapur Police has launched a smart traffic surveillance system in Dimapur with the installation of CCTV and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at key junctions, marking a major step towards modernising urban traffic management in the city.
Announcing the project on Thursday, Commissioner of Police Aotula T. Imchen said the initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion and curb rising air pollution levels caused by prolonged vehicle idling in busy areas. Implemented under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) with funding support from the Central Ministry, the project includes nine CCTV cameras and four ANPR cameras installed at Dhobinallah Junction, Tragopan Junction, Purana Bazaar Junction and Nagarjan Junction.
The project also includes a centralised command centre for real-time traffic monitoring and coordinated management. Police officials said the surveillance system would strengthen law enforcement, help investigate crimes and deter traffic violations.
Deputy Commissioner Dr. Tinojongshi Chang said the current project would later be expanded to other congestion-prone areas using road safety funds. DCP Traffic I. Meren Chenth said high-resolution night vision cameras installed at major intersections would help traffic personnel monitor multiple locations simultaneously and improve traffic flow.
