ESA Partners with “Don’t Nod” to Launch Aphelion: A Scientifically Rigorous Hunt for Planet Nine

The European Space Agency (ESA) has ventured into the world of immersive entertainment by partnering with French studio Don’t Nod to release Aphelion, a narrative-driven survival game grounded in hard space science. Released on April 28, 2026, for PC and next-gen consoles, the game tasks players with exploring the fictional ninth planet, Persephone, located at the frozen outer reaches of our solar system. Unlike typical sci-fi shooters, Aphelion was developed in close collaboration with real ESA scientists and engineers to ensure that every element—from the realistic behavior of sound in a vacuum to the authentic measurement units used by the protagonists—reflects the true conditions of a deep-space mission.

The story follows two ESA astronauts, Ariane Montclair and Thomas Cross, whose ship, the Horizon Shuttle IV, crash-lands on the uncharted world during the “Hope-01” mission. Players must navigate shifting realities and treacherous ice-covered landscapes using actual astronaut tools, such as oxygen management systems and pathfinders, rather than weapons. The agency has even created a dedicated “mission page” and official patch for the fictional Hope-01 on its website to blur the lines between education and play. According to ESA’s communication department, this project is part of a broader strategy to inspire the next generation of space professionals, coinciding with a major recruitment drive for over 400 positions. By blending cinematic storytelling with rigorous technical accuracy, Aphelion offers a “playable” look at the future of European exploration and the ongoing quest to understand the mysteries lurking at the edge of our celestial neighborhood.
