Himanta Biswa Sarma to take oath as Assam Chief Minister on May 12

Senior BJP leader Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma will take oath as the Chief Minister of Assam on May 12 after receiving formal approval from Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, according to an official notification issued by the Raj Bhavan.The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to be held at 11:40 am on Tuesday at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara in Guwahati. Preparations for the event have already begun, with security arrangements and stage construction work underway at the venue.The official notification stated that the Governor appointed Himanta Biswa Sarma as the Chief Minister under clause (1) of Article 164 of the Constitution of India. The announcement came shortly after Sarma was elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party and the NDA Legislature Party in Assam.

The development has cleared the way for the formation of the new government in the state following the conclusion of the Assembly election process. BJP leaders and NDA allies have welcomed the decision and described it as a continuation of the party’s leadership in Assam.Party workers and supporters gathered at different BJP offices in Guwahati and several districts after the announcement was made public. Many celebrated the development by distributing sweets and bursting crackers.Senior BJP leaders are also expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony. Sources in the party said several Union ministers, chief ministers from NDA-ruled states and senior BJP functionaries may remain present during the programme. The Veterinary College Field at Khanapara has earlier hosted several major political and government events. Authorities are expecting a large gathering for the oath-taking ceremony, including party workers, supporters and invited guests from across the state. Himanta Biswa Sarma is one of the most prominent political leaders in Assam and has played a key role in the BJP’s growth in the Northeast over the past several years. During his previous tenure as Chief Minister, the government focused on infrastructure development, welfare schemes, road connectivity, education, health and investment-related projects.

Following the official announcement, congratulatory messages poured in from BJP leaders and supporters across Assam and other northeastern states. Social media platforms were also filled with messages welcoming Sarma’s appointment as Chief Minister once again.Meanwhile, the administration has begun preparations to manage traffic and crowd movement in and around Khanapara on the day of the ceremony. Police personnel are likely to be deployed in large numbers to ensure smooth conduct of the programme. The oath-taking ceremony on May 12 will formally mark the beginning of the new term of the BJP-led government in Assam.
