Police seized fake currency notes worth around Rs 2.45 lakh during an operation at the Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in Guwahati and detained a youth from Arunachal Pradesh in connection with the case, officials said on Sunday. The operation was conducted on May 10 under the supervision of ACP Nilotpal Saikia of Azara subdivision after police received inputs regarding the movement of counterfeit currency in the area. According to police sources, the accused has been identified as Geyon Tayeng, a resident of Arunachal Pradesh. He was intercepted by the police team during the operation at ISBT Guwahati. During checking and search, officers recovered a large quantity of suspected fake currency notes from his possession.Police said the total face value of the seized counterfeit notes is around Rs 2,45,000.
Most of the notes were reportedly in high-value denominations. The seized currency has been sent for further examination as part of the investigation.Initial investigation suggested that the accused had allegedly collected the fake notes from another individual in Guwahati before he was caught by the police team. However, officials said the matter is still under investigation and more details are expected to emerge after questioning and technical analysis.Sources said investigators are now trying to trace the origin of the counterfeit notes and identify whether a larger network is involved in circulating fake Indian currency in Assam and neighbouring states. Police are also examining possible links with interstate operators. The seizure has raised concerns among security agencies as fake currency circulation continues to remain a serious issue due to its possible connection with organised crime and illegal activities. Police officials said special attention is being given to transport hubs such as ISBT, railway stations and interstate routes to prevent such activities.
Following the seizure, the detained youth was taken for further interrogation. Police officials have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests in connection with the case. Meanwhile, security and checking measures in and around the ISBT area have reportedly been intensified after the recovery. Authorities are also expected to investigate whether similar counterfeit notes have already entered local markets.
