Detailed IVF counselling helps couples make informed treatment decisions

Growing awareness around fertility treatment is increasing the importance of detailed counselling for couples considering IVF, with experts stressing that informed decision-making plays a key role in treatment outcomes and long-term planning.

Dr Kalpana Jain, Fertility Specialist at Birla Fertility & IVF, said couples often arrive for their first IVF consultation carrying anxiety, uncertainty and expectations of finding an immediate solution. However, she noted that the consultation process is designed to help patients understand their diagnosis, available treatment options and realistic expectations before beginning treatment.

According to Dr Jain, counselling starts with reviewing medical history and ensuring all required tests for both partners are complete. She said treatment based on incomplete diagnosis may not deliver the desired outcomes.

She further stated that IVF is not always the first option for every couple and patients should clearly understand why a specific treatment is being recommended. “Couples who understand the reasoning behind their treatment plan feel more confident and prepared throughout the process,” she said.

The fertility specialist also highlighted that IVF success rates should be viewed in the context of a couple’s age, diagnosis and medical history rather than as standalone percentages. She added that emotional preparedness is equally important, as stress and uncertainty often lead couples to discontinue treatment prematurely.

Experts advise couples to discuss treatment protocols, expected success rates, cycle costs and multi-cycle package options during their first consultation.
