Police Officer Suspended After Assault Allegation

A constable of the Nagaland Police’s Armed Branch has been arrested in connection with the alleged sexual assault and rape of an elderly woman in Kiphire district, police said on Thursday. The accused, identified as Heluikie Nsanglung alias Amos, was posted with the District Executive Force (DEF) in Kiphire. According to a press release issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Police, Kiphire, a case was registered at the Kiphire Women Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following a complaint lodged on June 17.

Police said the First Information Report (FIR) alleged that the constable sexually assaulted and raped an elderly woman from High School Ward in Kiphire town. Acting swiftly on the complaint, law enforcement authorities apprehended the accused on the same day. The victim was taken to District Hospital Kiphire for medical examination, while the accused also underwent a medico-legal examination after his arrest. Preliminary medical findings indicated that the accused was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of examination. As mandated under the new criminal laws, a team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Dimapur, was deployed to assist the investigation. The forensic team reached Kiphire on June 18 and collected evidence from the alleged crime scene.

Police said the accused has been placed under immediate suspension and departmental proceedings have been initiated. He remains in police custody while the investigation continues. Nagaland Police assured that a thorough and impartial probe will be carried out and all necessary legal steps will be taken to ensure justice.
